The Developing Duckling Awards are the beginning of the learn to swim adventure for babies/infants up to 2 years old.

Ideal for gaining pool confidence while staying close to parent support, these awards are followed by our Junior Duckling Awards.

By the culmination of this stage your baby should be able to:

  1. Enter the pool safely and comfortably, with full parent support.
  2. Move up and down in the pool, in an upright position, with full parent support.
  3. Float on the back and return to an upright position, with full parent support.
  4. Be comfortable with water being poured on the back of the head.
  5. Travel smoothly through the pool, in an upright position, with full parent support.
  6. Climb out of the pool safely with full parent support.

DD2 6M TO 10M

By the culmination of this stage your baby should be able to:

  1. Enter the pool safely and comfortably, with full parent support.
  2. Float on the back, with full parent support.
  3. Splash hands in the pool.
  4. Complete a 360 degree turn, with full parent support. (The parent should hold the baby close to them at first and then at arm’s length, the baby should be facing away from the parent).
  5. Move through the pool in a streamlined position on the back, with full parent support.
  6. Be at ease with the face being washed or splashed.
  7. Travel smoothly through the water, in an upright position, with full parent support.
  8. Travel on the front or back, with full parent support.
  9. Make progress towards holding the side of the pool, with full parent support.
  10. Climb out of the pool safely, with full parent support.

DD3 9M TO 14M

By the culmination of this stage your baby should be able to:

  1. Enter the pool safely, with full parent support. Swimmers should be encouraged to sit on the side and wait for parent instruction.
  2. Float on the back, with full parent support behind the head, shoulders and hips.
  3. Reach and grab toys on the pool surface.
  4. Rotate 180 degrees either using a log roll or an upright position, with full parent support.
  5. Travel through the pool in a streamlined position on the front, with full parent support.
  6. Be at ease with pool being showered over the face.
  7. Travel on the back using floatation equipment, with full parent support.
  8. Hold the rail or side of pool and move towards the step or ladders using floatation equipment, with full parent support.
  9. Climb out of the pool safely with parent supervision.

DD4 12M TO 18M

By the culmination of this stage your baby should be able to:

  1. Enter the pool safely from a seated or standing position and return to the wall or pool side, with full parent support.
  2. Float on the front using floatation equipment, with full parent support.
  3. Reach and grab toys on top of and under the surface of the pool.
  4. Rotate 180 degrees either using a log roll or an upright position, using floatation equipment and with minimal parent support.
  5. Push away from the wall in a streamlined position, with full parent support.
  6. Be at ease wetting or splashing the face and putting the chin in the pool.
  7. Travel on the front using floatation equipment, with full parent support.
  8. Hold the rail or side of pool and move towards the steps or ladders using floatation equipment, with full parent support.
  9. Climb out of the pool safely with parent supervision.

DD5 18M TO 24M

By the culmination of this stage your baby should be able to complete all activity in the DD1 to DD4 as above.  Including.

  1. Enter the pool safely from a seated or standing position and return to the wall or pool side, with full parent support.

  3. Reach and grab toys on top of and under the surface of the pool.
  4. Rotate 180 degrees either using a log roll or an upright position, using floatation equipment and with minimal parent support.

  6. Be at ease wetting or splashing the face and putting the chin in the pool.
  7. Travel on the front using floatation equipment, with full parent support.
